The UN’s regular and peacekeeping budgets are approved by the UN General Assembly. Member State assessment rates are also determined by the General Assembly, with renegotiations taking place every three years.
The President submits his annual budget request to Congress, which lays out funding levels for the UN in the coming fiscal year.
The House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations committees and Appropriations committees hold hearings, debate, and pass their versions of a bill that includes funding for the UN.
After negotiations, a final bill to fund the federal government for the next fiscal year is passed, which includes funding for the UN. It then heads to the president’s desk to be signed into law.
